NIGHT CAMP 2007

Keeping A Look On Our Being. Sebastinians, Taralets!

By: A. Danan

Keeping a night alive, stretching an energy to the limit, sharing and sparing a moment or two, dancing, yelling, laughing, eating, partying, getting spiritually inspired,… how else would one spend a 15-hour event with nary a sleep? This aint ordinary for a student’s life, but for a Sebastinian, the affair could be a night to remember.

Some 700 or more students stayed wide awake June 29 to 30 and became closer to their school’s spirit. The event was called NIGHT CAMP 2007, a traditional welcoming of freshmen and transferees now nestling at San Sebastian College-Recoletos, Manila.

THE BAPTISM
The ceremonial welcoming commenced with the endowing of medal and lighting of candle as each freshman is received and pooled altogether in the quadrangle to form a congregation of neophytes ready to embrace the values and charisms as new Sebastinians.

INTRODUCING ST. SEBASTIAN
Very appropriately, this was followed by the para-liturgical activity led by the Campus Ministry. Karakol Dancers positioned center stage to introduce the St. Sebastian statue in the image of a stripped soldier who is shot in agony with several arrows. Fr. Cris A. Palomar, OAR rekindled St. Sebastian’s life and sacrifices through which a steadfast fidelity and a strong faith were best emulated. Fr. Cris emphasized…”Like him, may we be able to stand for what we believe and be prompted to share the Gospel of Christ even in times of trials and sufferings. May his zeal inspire us to live by the name of our school – San Sebastian.”

FROM THE IDOL TO THE ICONS
The new Sebastinians were introduced to the inviting ensemble performance of the SSRDT, PEP SQUAD and the STAGS. This interesting dance mix glued everyone’s eyes to the varied footworks from stomping hip-hop/streetdance to the vertical flips and up high lifts to the graceful tiptoes of ballet theatrics,… truly an exciting showdown of talents. This entertainment portion opened a window for everyone to see and get the feel of an exciting life in SSC-R with talents truly used and honed.

KEEPING A LOOK ON OUR BEING (KALOOB)
Taking the Night Camp at the helm, Fr. Joel S. Naranja delivered the opening remarks. He stressed on this year’s theme “KALOOB” (Keeping A Look On Our Being) which lays down the emphasis of the celebration. According to him “KALOOB implies giving of one’s self to other person”. He further noted “this timely celebration allows an individual to look into his interiority and be able to blend well and become a true Sebastinian”. He encouraged the participants to exert great involvement in order to see and feel how it is becoming a true Sebastinian.

TAKING THE NIGHT AWAY
Pushing energy to the max was comedian Gary Lim who was paired with Weng (mass communication student). Throwing punch lines, making segues, taking cues, coining significant thoughts from interesting interlinks kept the audience alive and directed especially when the meat of the night was observed,.. the group dynamics. Mrs. Jane Baustista gave instructions for workshop sessions on self-awareness, interiority as a Sebastinian value, team-building . About 102 facilitators composed of faculty and students handled the participants, each facilitator supervising 10-15 persons in a group. The hype came even greater emotionally when children of Barangay Nepomuceno (an adopted community) were introduced to each group for interaction.

A CELEBRATION THROUGH THE EUCHARIST
Let the blessings outpour! The concelebrated mass attended by the priest administrators ably set the scenario of the welcoming fathers embracing their children with spiritual blessings. Fr. Nemesio D. Tolentin, OAR rendered the homily citing the values and charisms that distinctly identify a Sebastian. He went on to emphasize that more than knowing other things, it is best to know who we are now just as Christ would want everyone to know Him better. But other than internalizing the values and charisms, he sent off these thoughts that will strengthen the practice of the core values:

We have to treat each other as friends.
We are a brother or a sister to everybody.
We have to show love for learning.
We have to promote courage and learn to stand up for what is right, true and good.

TIME TO PARTY
The night stayed young and so did the crowd and organizers as they were entertained with guests, games, gigs and other suprises. Diamond Laboratories (through its VP for Sales Marketing Mr. Joseph Cu, an SSC-R alumnus) provided the entertainment with song and dance number and games as they launched its Save Our Skin anti-pimple products which were distributed for free. Guest alumni and PBA stars Mark Macapagal and Rodney Santos dropped by to spread inspiration and talked about the lasting values they are still proud to exhibit being among the country’s top cagers.

Bands brought the energy up and constant with a mixture of piece genres from OPM rock to classical love songs. Featured performers were CAS Band, Chikiting ni Pedro Band, Rose Quarts Band, Michael Serrano and his band, and Ynstynct Band, an upcoming band courtesy of Universal Records.

MR. AND MISS NIGHT CAMP 2007
From the 50 aspirants randomly chosen, 20 guys and girls romped on stage to vie for the title of Mr. and Miss Night Camp 2007. The group was trimmed down to top 10 through a ballot casting. Judges composed of Ms. Jane Bautista, Mr. Philip Cheng, and Miss Faith Monterey gave a tension-filled evening drawing excitement from the crowd as finalists were confronted with tough questions under pressure. Emerging winners were the following:

KEEPING THE ENERGY UP HIGH
Indefatigably, Dr. Rod Ponce made a crowd in focus by constantly reminding facilitators and students on the task of the hour. Fr. Rene F. Paglinawan even shared a song after presenting the Sebastinian traits and values. Mr. Ronald Riparip took centerstage together with student dancers as he led everyone to the right steps for the Night Camp 2007 theme TARALETS by Imago. Meanwhile, the IREP group didn’t let the energy gone wane with its action song “dip” that awakened the huge crowd.

THE FINAL BLESSING
Fr. Dionisio C. Cachero thanked everyone for their participation specially citing the New Sebastinians for a very positive response as demonstrated by their active involvement. Fully aware of the tremenduous effort that the community has exerted and the great amount of energy lent by the new students for the success of the affair, he is firm sure that Night Camp has afforded everyone not only a 15-hour non-stop overnight experience but a very significant night to remember.

Welcome to SSC-R Manila. Bravo Baste!
