STAGS MAKING WAVES IN INVITATIONAL TOUR

By A.C. Danan

Junior and Senior Basketball Teams spread across towns, provinces and islands waging supremacy in invitational games. Painting the towns red and gold victoriously had earned greater popularity for the school in its exciting effort of bringing the academic and sports programs closer to its potential enrollees specifically the college freshmen.

Regarded as a “unique” marketing strategy supplementing the traditional recruitment activities through career orientations and advertising, “invitational games” became part of events-creation as a political ploy, organized and coordinated with mayors, councilors and other aspiring political leaders.

PANIQUI, TARLAC (March 16, 2007)
Being the second most populated town, Paniqui drew thousands of spectators to an open coliseum (with nary a space) because of jampacked inivational game, a highlight of the town fiesta. Beating the “dream-team” (a selection of the best players of recent competition), the seniors easily concluded the four-quarter play with a wide margin.

Mayor Elpidio Ibarra’s warm welcome was demonstrated by the hospitality of his office through Councilor Roberto Ian Monte, a college and graduate school alumnus of SSC-R Manila. Having his son graduated from SSC-R Manila (who is now working in a prominent bank in Makati) prompted him to gladly accept the invitation. Sumptuous food with native delicacies were served to the delight of the guests. SSC-R troop was composed of the Senior Basketball team, Pep Squad, Jammerstags, Fr. Joel S. Naranja, Albert Danan, and Miss Anne Penascoza.

Prior to the game, flyers, posters, and tarpaulins were distributed to the different schools such as Paniqui Vocational High School, St. Vincent School, Ridgemore School, St. Rose Catholic School, Central Luzon Colleges, and ICT College.

PUERTO GALERA, MINDORO (March 30, 2007)
An hour-and-a-half sailing from Batangas Port, docked the SSC-R team to the clear shore and fine sands of Puerto Galera’s Talipanan, a stone-throw away from the commercial White Beach. Becoming the nest of the promo team, Talipanan Beach situates the rest house of Mrs. Lucy V. Evangelista whose daughter was a mass communication graduate of SSC-R Manila. Courtesy of Puerto Galera Mayor Atienza, the group was accommodated to that two-storey rest house which was few meters away from the inviting shore. After a few hours of fun and frolicking at the beach commenced the game at the gymnasium which was named after Hon. Ariston Y. Atienza.

This time the Juniors set foot on the hardcourt meeting the best of the best of Puerto Galera cagers who drew tensions in the first five minutes of the game by inching out a 10 point lead. But behold, the Juniors dominated all quarter finishes with 15-30, 32-44, 60-67, and 80-94.

Puerto Galera is an enticing place for nothing. A by-word for tourists and urban travelers, the place enchants with the wonders of sea pleasurers like corals and colorful fishes of the San Antonio Coral Long Island, a haven for snorkeling and diving. The island boasts of the complement being one of the three most beautiful coral gardens in the world.

BAGAC, BATAAN (March 14-15, 2007)
The scourging heat drove the group to the mountainous site of Bagac, Bataan where Mayor Arman “Wawaw” Ramos through his aid Mr. Jonas Marquez prepared a welcome set-up with lunch and eventual dining activities. The “basket meet’ offered an opportunity to discover alumni in the persons of Manolet Gomez, 1997 management graduate, and Atty. Mike Operario, 1989 political science major.

The Juniors once again displayed hard court superiority dominating leads in all four quarters with scores 17-25, 30-43, 56-80, and 85-107.

Providing entertainment was a delighful number by the Pep Squad performed after each quarter. Meanwhile, Fr. Joel Naranja inspired the spectators with his historical accounts of the beginnings of the town which became witness to the early Augustinian missionaries who spread God's good news and served the town. He then segued to talk about SSC-R Manila's course programs, a timely announcement since there were potential college enrollees in the place.

The group was housed at the National Power Corporation Compound situated about 100 meters away from the Mayor’s residence. On the way back, the group was tendered with richness of sea food courtesy of the Bringas Family in Orane, Bataan.

Bagac comprises about 14 barangays with 24,000 population . Most people source their income through farming. A great number of college students normally migrate to Manila for better education. Schools within proximity are Balanga City College, Asia Pacific College, and Letran College.

PLARIDEL, LIPA CITY, BATANGAS (April 19, 2007)
The Seniors played heroes in the match versus the NBC Team of political aspirant Don Mendoza. Giving no chance for the opponent to draw a lead, they dominated the scores with 18-23, 36-48, 56-69, and 70-103.
