MANILA, Philippines - San Sebastian turned its showdown with
listless Angeles University Foundation into a virtual workout as the Stags
coasted to a 97-65 triumph yesterday to regain the solo lead in the 85th NCAA men's basketball tournament.

Warming up for their highly anticipated duel with powerhouse Jose Rizal U on
Monday, the unforgiving Stags led by as many as 53 points early in the third
quarter on their way to their sixth straight victory at the FilOil Flying V
Arena in San Juan.

"I'm happy that our hard work in practice is paying off," said San Sebastian rookie
coach Ato Agustin, who had five players, led by Jimbo Aquino with 21 points, in
double figures. "We're maturing as a team."
Agustin said he reminded his players not to take the Great Danes for
granted, pointing out how a last-placed team like University of the Philippines
stunned defending UAAP champion and erstwhile unbeaten Ateneo last Sunday.

Guest team Emilio Aguinaldo College earlier registered consecutive wins for the first time by turning back
short-handed St. Benilde, 78-73, behind Ruel Jabaybay.

The Generals relied on Ruel Jabaybay's hustle plays in the final period to
thwart shorthanded St. Benilde, 78-73, in the first game.

The 6-foot-3 Jabaybay grabbed six offensive rebounds and scored 10 of his 12
points in the fourth period as the Generals rallied from 60-64 deficit in the
fourth period to improve to 2-4.

The Blazers lost key players Jan Tan and Chuck Dalanon in the second quarter
after the two players were ejected for leaving the bench during a scuffle
involving teammate Mac Abolucion and EAC's Russell Yaya.
Jeff Morial almost single-handedly kept the Blazers in the game by unloading
a season-high 32 points, including 23 in the second half.

In juniors' action, defending champion San Sebastian improved to 5-1 after blasting AUF, 113-23, while St. Benilde jacked up its record to 3-4 with an 85-67 bashing of EAC, 85-67.

THE SAN SEBASTIAN College-Recoletos Stags continued on their undefeated
streak as they routed the Angeles University Foundation, 97-65, in the 85th
NCAA basketball tournament yesterday at the Arena in San Juan City.

The win was the Stags' sixth in a row and it was made possible by the hot
shooting of skipper Jimbo Aquino, who tallied 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting.

He was however, not the only sharp knife in the cupboard as he was ably
supported by Pamboy Raymundo, Gilbert Bulawan, Ian Sangalang and Dave Najorda who scored 16, 14, 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals grabbed their second win of
the tournament as they upset the College of St. Benilde Blazers, 78-73. EAC,
another guest team in the competition, drew strength from their free-throw
shooting and their offensive rebounding in the fourth period to fend off the
Blazers.

Sweet-shooting John Santos fired 18 points while Claude Cubo, Argel Mendoza and Ruel Jabaybay chipped in 17, 13 and 12 points, respectively.

San Sebastian College played Class A basketball and never gave Angeles University Foundation a moment to breathe in a 97-65 rout yesterday to grab the solo lead in the 85th National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil-Flying V Arena.

The lopsided outcome had the Stags coach Renato Agustin sporting sporting a wide grin as the Recoletos cagers picked up their sixth straight win, leaving Jose Rizal University at solo second (5-0). The Danes absorbed their fifth loss in six outings.
