SAN Sebastian College leaned on a vicious trapping defense and a surprise package in the endgame to turn back College of St. Benilde and continue its winning run in the 85th National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Calvin Abueva, a 6’3” prized find from Pampanga, capped the Stags’ endgame breakaway anchored on a game – long trapping defense as he fired to key baskets to give San Sebastian a safe bubble en route to its third straight victory and the solo lead.

Abueva had 17 apiece to tie Jimbo Aquino’s production. Aquino also had 10 rebounds.

Overall, the Stags are on top of the standing with the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers a game behind at 2-0. The Blazers dropped into a tie for third with the San Beda Red Lions and the Arellano University Chiefs at 2-1.
Abueva shattered the game’s deadlock with a putback with 1:54 left in the second quarter for a 40-38 count.

The Stags then employed a trapping defense that forced the Blazers to lapse into an array of turnovers, paving the way for the Recto – based dribbles’ 10-0 run that stretched the score to 44 – 38.

Dave Najorda, who had six point, added two more baskets as the Stags closed out the third with 48 – 38 edge.

Meanwhile, the Letran Knights bounced back from a poor third quarter performance to repulse the Perpetual Help Altas, 73 – 68, and claim their first win in three games.

RJ Jazul played his best game so far, unloading five triples and finishing with 24 points for the finishing with 24 points for the Knights.

VETERAN JIMBO AQUINO CONTINUED his solid play and rookie Calvin Abueva produced his finest game of the season as San Sebastian pummeled St. Benilde, 75-62, yesterday to seize the solo lead in the 85th NCAA men’s basketball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Arena.
Aquino, who averaged 23 points in the first two games, fired 17 this time, including two clutch jumpers that kept the surging Blazers at bay in the fourth period and allowed the Stags to roll to their third straight victory.
The 6-foot-3 Abueva, a power forward, matched Aquino’s output and pulled down 10 rebounds in 21 minutes. He made eight points in a third quarter burst that turned a five-point deficit to a 14-point bubble which proved too big to overhaul for the Blazers.

The first loss in three games dropped St. Benilde into a tie for third place with San Beda and Arellano.

“We’re happy that we are on top,” said San Sebastian coach Ato Agustin. “But we still have 15 games to go and we still need to improve.”
Earlier, Letran finally cracked the winning column by coming from behind to pip Perpetual Help, 73-68.
