San Sebastian College scrambled its way back from a two-set deficit to eke out a marathon 22-25, 22-25, 25-12, 25-15, 15-12 victory over Letran to complete a two-game sweep and a six-peat feat in the 86th NCAA women's volleyball tournament at the Fil-Oil/Flying V Arena in San Juan City.

Power-hitting Joy Benito unleashed a 31-hit effort, all coming on attacks, that powered the San Sebastian belles to the come-from-behind victory and their 24th championship overall.

Benito was eventually named the tournament MVP for her superb performance.

"We're happy to be back on top, its really a good feeling winning a championship again for the school," said San Sebastian coach Roger Gorayeb, who owns 22 of the 24 titles by the Mendiola-based school since he took over in 1984.

A maze of reception errors proved costly for the Lady Knights, who just blew a 2-0 lead and never recovered from there.

Actually, Letran mustered enough strength to rally its way back from an 8-14 deficit in the deciding set after the troika Mharu Burce, Sarah Espelita and Gena Andaya connived in scoring four unanswered points to close in on 12-14.

Andaya had a chance of sending the Muralla-based squad closer but she misfired on her serve, sending the San Sebastian Lady Spikers and their fans in frantic celebration at centercourt.

Elaine Cruz and rookie Karen Berbano combined fro 25 hits while Bonsai Mirasol contributed 10 including three on blocks in what was her farewell match since she would be graduating this year.

Manel Carolino paced Letran with 14 kills while Burce added 12 she laced with three service aces.

San Sebastian's Cruz, Benito and Mae Crisostomo also wound up the Best Spiker, Server and Receiver, respectively, while Letran's Melissa Cu, Andaya and Carolino consoled themselves with the Best Digger, Setter and Scorer awards.

San Beda's Cess Molina emerged the Best Blocker in the tournament.

The individual performers in the men's side were Perpetual Help’s Jay Dela Cruz (Best Spiker) at Adam Daquer (Best Blocker), San Beda’s James Lorca (Best Server), Lorenz Capati (Best Scorer) at Pocholo Apostol (Best Digger), Arellano’s John Levi Muñoz (Best Setter) at Chris Salvador (Best Receiver).

Some 5,000 people flocked the SM MOA grounds the morning of January 16 to share fun and run for the FIRST STAGS RUN 2011: “Takbo Para sa Misyon”, a fund-drive meant to sustain the school’s missionary efforts local and abroad. Runners coming from the different departments lined up to take the 3K, 5K and 10K run categories. Also taking part were about 500 runners and marathon enthusiasts representing their groups and companies as outside participants.

Covered by ABS-CBN Sports, the event commenced with a program which was hosted by Mr. Albert Danan, Tintin Junio, Romeo dela Cruz, Jaivie del Socorro and L.A. Montano.

Running away as the first three finishers in the three categories were the following:

The First STAGS RUN 2011 held its Press Conference on December 8, 2010 at the Fish Out of Water Restaurant, Greenbelt 5 Makati. Attended by about 30 press people, the conference unveiled information on the event which aims to benefit the school’s missionary and charity events.

Fr. Leonardo P. Pauligue, OAR, in his opening remarks, ushered everyone to extend a strong partnership in this great endeavor and help make the project run for a mission.

Fr. Leander V. Barrot, OAR provided further details of the event emphasizing the need to especially support the OAR “brothers” in Taiwan and Africa whose lives have been dedicated to the social and evangelical thrusts of the OAR.

When the missionaries came in 1803, Catholicism in mainland China flourished and this led to the establishment of four (4) OAR parishes with the Diocese of Kaohshiung.

The arrival of the first Recollect missionaries in Sierra Leone, Africa in December 1997, sparked significant developments benefiting the different areas in Kamabai with 8 chapels, 3 new schools, 22 deep wells, 4 houses for volunteers, dental chairs and medical aids to over 1,000 Africans, free education for 70 preschool pupils, 320 secondary students and 20 college students, among others.

Meanwhile, the Kamalu and nearby areas (Kamaranka, Rogbin, Kamawuni) were provided with 39 centers with 12 catechumens and 2 volunteer catechists in order to serve 3,000 Catholics. Said areas were gifted with 43 primary schools with 120 teachers and three secondary schools with over 30 teachers. The farthest school is four (4) hours away.

STAGS RUN hopes to raise about a million pesos according to Mrs. Ceres Alcantara , SSC-R Accounting Manager. Fr. Barrot further stressed that the event further calls for the support of not only the immediate community members, but likewise solicits strong participation from the parents, alumni, suppliers, and other fun run and marathon enthusiasts. With a registration fee of P300 (for SSC-R students and employees) and P500 (for outsiders), a marathon shirt will be given especially to early registrants. Cash prizes await the first three finishers in each event. Each event will have two divisions, men and women. Participants will converge, do and finish the 10K, 5K, or 3K run at the vast area situating the SM Mall of Asia on January 16, 2011. The event serves as a kick-off to the observance of the 64th Foundation Week Celebration which is slated on January 16-22, 2011.

The combination of a long distance outreach and benchmarking project, in a known region of the country but new to most of us stirred some feelings of excitement and enthusiasm among the members of the SSC-R ICT Department; Rev. San Sebastinian community became a sea of black as it joined millions of grieving Filipinos last November 24, 2010 in remembering the 57 lives taken during the bloody Ampatuan Massacre.

Though the tragic event happened November 23rd last year in the province of Maguindanao in Mindanao, the Red and Gold country celebrated it Wednesday instead.

Radyo Baste (RB), the school’s only campus radio pushed the same project which started in 2009 with ( this time) the Supreme Student Government (SSG) as the leading partner who teamed up with the NTP, Elementary, High school and College department.

According to Mr. Melchor Topacio, the assistant chief security, nearly half of the college students population were in black, 90 percent of the senior high and majority of the entire faculty including grade school.

With its advocacy in preserving our freedom of speech, Radyo Baste said that they will continue this tradition every year until justice is served.
